My name is Ida Hammer. I am a Whole Horse trimmer, Rehabilitation specialist, Hoof trim educator and consultant.
I have been around horses, pretty much my whole life. I have ridden competitive trail rides, jockeyed race horses, barrel raced, did a little cutting, and relaxing trail rides. I was well steeped in the traditional world. Our first cutting horse was diagnosed with navicular disease by the time she was 4. We treated her very aggressively with every recommended treatment. None of them worked, our perfect little cutting horse spent the first half of her life laying in the pasture.
Fast forward 11 years to my next leg of the journey. Ada and I purchased an amazing ranch raised blue roan Quarter horse named Bobbi. I was fortunate enough to go to the Parelli Center with her and ride with Aimee Brimhall for a week. All was well until we came home. Bobbi was now 3 legged lame. We went to the Uof I they quickly diagnosed her with navicular disease. They listed off the same protocol of treatment as our first horse, the only difference was they suggested a neurectomy and that she wouldn't make it to her teenage years. After the grim news Ada said "Find a better way, put her to sleep now, or get rid of her" Putting her to sleep or getting rid of her was not an option. I wrote to Aimee Brimhall and told her my sad news. She said right away don't do anything until you get in touch with Pete Ramey or Jaime Jackson.
I did so immediately! I applied for and joined the AANHCP. I traveled the U.S. learning from the best of the best. I came home and started both navicular on this new program immediately. Both horses were completely sound within 3 months. I graduated with flying colors in March of 2006. I was finding great success in rehabilitating navicular, founder, side bone horses and many others. I began teaching anatomy, Beginner trim class and final assessments for incoming students. By the end of 2006 I was trimming near 600 hundred horses. Pete Ramey was leading the charge on some of the most progressive hoof care in the world, so things became a little disheveled in the AANHCP. At that period in time there was a shift in our group and Pete founded the American Hoof Association. In 2020 the AHA officially dissolved.
I am the founder of Mackinaw Dells 2 Applied Whole Horse Hoof Care Program, and also a proud member and mentor for the PHCP.
I am a trimmer, Educator and a full time student of the horse.

My Now:
I am a graduate and former member of the AANHCP. I have worked directly and indirectly with Pete Ramey . I have several CE hours in conference time with Dr. Robert Bowker from Michigan State University, Dr. Deb Taylor Auburn University, the Late Dr. Kerry Ridgway , completed Dr. Eleanor Kellon NRC Plus and Nutrition as Therapy.
I have founded The Applied Whole Horse Hoof Care Program
I have over 100 graduates in the U.S. and abroad. I have hundreds of students trimming and going through the program. I teach throughout the United States and currently maintain a client base of around 200 horses.
What others are saying:
"Ida Hammer is one of those rare individuals who has it all: extensive equine biomechanics knowledge, great talent and experience with rehabilitating hoof problems, book smarts, great with boot fitting and gluing... But she is a true teacher, too -- she knows how to connect with people and make the difficult concepts seem easy. My hat's off to her."
Pete Ramey
These classes are phenomenal!
I have worked on the racetrack as a groom, exercise rider, trainer and owner (19 years). These classes have completely revamped the way I look at equine management and hoofcare. Ida is very experienced and well taught. I really appreciate the time she spends relaying her knowledge to others.
I look forward to my last three classes for certification!

Opened-up an entire new perspective toward understanding the pathology of the hoof. Hands-on classes encouraged me to take more notice of the overall condition of my horses hooves and also to feel comfortable rasping their hooves correctly in between trims. Also provided support with facts on the benefits of establishing a natural horse care program. And that Mustang roll…can't say enough good things about it. Thank you Ida!
